Welcome to the Sustainable Landfill website |
Sustainable landfill is possible! Sustainable landfill is a realistic and highly promising technique for the future. This has been demonstrated by research conducted over the last few years by several Dutch companies. These companies are members of the Sustainable Landfill Foundation and are investigating the feasibility of sustainable landfill practices. The research reports available on this website contain mostly technical information intended for scientists, policymakers, specialists and other interested parties. If you wish to know more about the Foundation and our work, please contact us. |

Our main research conclusions:
- Sustainable landfill delivers better results than current practices.
- Sustainable landfill techniques can be used for every type of waste.

What is the idea behind sustainable landfill? Landfill sites are not dangerous because pollutants are:
- broken down into harmless substances and/or
- flushed out (and therefore rendered harmless) or
- immobilised in the landfill and so remain there for ever.
The landfill therefore poses no threat to people or the environment.

Research results announced on 15 May 2006 Our experimental and field research into sustainable landfill is the first study to include all the relevant aspects within a single modelling and assessment methodology. At a symposium on sustainable landfill held on 15 May researchers presented the results of a study lasting more than five years.
